As a country music singer in the late 1970’s through early ’80’s, Andrea performed in the New York City area as a solo artist in music clubs such as The Dug Out, Dakota, Rodeo, O’Lunney’s and Dillon’s and also was one of the lead singers and rhythm guitarist with the band Bluewater. While performing as a country singer, she studied opera and in 1982, sang her first operatic role as Siebel in Faust with Verdi Square Opera in New York City. For more than 20 years, she performed leading roles under the name Andrea Abushady, garnering reviews such as, Andrea Abushady, coloring her steady mezzo-soprano with great restraint, proved uncommonly convincing in a trouser role as the poet Don Ramiro (the New York Times, 1991, review of Mozart’s La Finta Giardiniera), Andrea, as Lola, turned in the finest performance of the evening both vocally and in stage presence (The Brooklyn Spectator, 1989, review of Mascagni’s Cavalleria Rusticana). Described both as “forceful” by Peter Goodman of Newsday (May 18, 1987) and offering, “nicely nuanced interpretations” by James Roos of the Miami Herald (June 28, 1993), Andrea easily traverses and expresses a wide range of emotions in her performances. Andrea is also a yoga instructor and sound healer utilizing crystal singing bowls and toning in workshops and concerts.
